Bien Hoa: Agent Orange
Bien Hoa: Lovely! (except for the Agent Orange)
Bien Hoa is a great city. It’s built along the Dong Nai river, which means lots of opportunities for coffee and meals with a breeze and a nice view. We visited Buu Long Park, where you can rent swan paddle boats and have a romantic ride while being surrounded by limestone karsts.
Bien Hoa is also the home of Agent Orange. During the Vietnam War, there was an American airbase that produced and stored the deadly dioxin. The area, which is now separated by a wall from the rest of the city, is still very contaminated. We have a peak over the wall and discuss the current and past affects of Agent Orange in Bien Hoa.

Ummmm … eating and drinking in Biên Hòa isn’t a good idea. The soil and water are still heavily contaminated with Agent Orange. Fish, ducks, and chickens all test positive for the junk too. My husband was stationed at Fort Long Binh, 16 km away ~ Army. He worked supply. He was driven to Biên Hòa once a week to collect laundry. Part of his duties were to sort through soldiers duffle bags that they left before being sent home after their tour of duty was over. All the fatigues of the soldiers who were in the Agent Orange soaked bush were handled by my husband, bare hands, no protective gear, cuz back then the story was “Agent Orange isn’t a toxin” (per the idiots in charge). The fatigues were laundered and issued to other soldiers. Biên Hòa aka Camp Dioxin was ground zero for Agent Orange. Don’t expose yourself unnecessarily. Dioxin is no joke and it will really mess you up. My husband is sick. Be smart and stay away from there. He didn’t have a choice. You do and so does that pretty young lady you were with.
