Cambodia is a truly unique country. It’s been through a lot of horrible things, which it is still recovering from. When I first visited the country, it was eye-opening. The poverty and the desperation was like nothing I had ever seen. I’ve since been back, 3 years later, and I found that a lot had changed in that short period of time. The atrocities that happened there in the late 70s will not be forgotten, but the Cambodian people have worked hard to turn their country into an amazing place to travel.
I was so impressed by the change that we ended up moving to Phnom Penh.
We made the move from Ecuador to Cambodia, and after a 2 week long quarantine, it’s time to find an apartment in Phnom Penh. Apartment hunting in Cambodia is a wild ride. There are a ton of options at a variety of levels. I’m here to break it all down for you.

Right now, as I type this, I am sitting in a hotel in Cambodia.

There’s a fine line between being spontaneous and unprepared when traveling. We like to have a layout of the city we are going to — know where the hotels, restaurants, and main attractions are. Unless we are traveling at a busy time, or there’s a place that we really want to stay, we don’t book a room ahead. Usually, we just have a list of 3 or 4 places that sound good, and then take the chance that at least one of them will have an opening. Most of the time, we end up at the first place on our list, but there have been a few times we were brought to the edge of craziness, running around like headless chickens, sweating profusely, yelling obscenities at each other, as we carried our heavy bags from hotel to hotel, eventually staying in a room that could be confused for a bus station bathroom. Now that we’re in our 30s, this isn’t allowed to happen anymore. I’ve been given strict orders from the higher up (ie. Sara). Luckily, the internet is always at my fingertips and there are really smart ambitious people out there.

I wait, slightly nervous, as a boy slowly has his hair cut. The barber runs the comb through the hair and snips at it with the scissors. The end result is a hairdo that I refer to as “the Asian”. I’m definitely not here for one of those. Two weeks of traveling has left me with a patchy fuzz across my face. It’s time we parted ways. I get into the chair and am reclined to 180 degrees.
